The plugs are used to fill the injury channel, protecting the steel belt from corrosion. By using plugs, the repair process is complete.
They are especially useful for repairing tread punctures at an angle greater than 20 degrees, where traditional mushroom plugs cannot be applied.
STEM plugs are used in combination with MU universal patches or MR radial and MS bias inserts.
Inside each plug is a metal wire, which allows for easy insertion through the damaged area.
How to repair a punctured tire using a universal patch and a STEM plug:
-
Use pliers to remove the foreign object from the tire and mark the damaged area with chalk.
-
Ream the injury several times with a carbide cutter from both the inside and outside of the tire.
-
Remove the protective foil from the STEM plug and apply Super Valkarn vulcanizing cement.
-
Apply a small amount of Super Valkarn cement into the injury channel.
-
If your plug does not have a guiding wire, use a plug wire-puller tool.
-
Insert the STEM plug into the injury channel from the inside of the tire.
-
Cut off the inner end of the plug, leaving 2–3 mm protruding from the tire surface.
-
Position the patch over the marked area and outline a slightly larger area with chalk.
-
Clean and chemically roughen the marked area with Liquid Buffer. Remove any dirt or grease with a scraper.
-
Mechanically buff the area using a low-speed grinder.
-
Use a pneumatic vacuum to remove all rubber dust and particles.
-
Evenly and thoroughly apply Super Valkarn vulcanizing cement to the marked area and wait for it to dry completely.
-
Remove the aluminum foil from the patch and place it onto the tire, avoiding contact with the bonding surface.
